North Kansas City Bin Cleaning & Trash Day Guide (64116)

Most Northland cities need a map to answer "what day is trash?" North Kansas City needs one word. Tuesday.

Every residential address inside NKC city limits is on the same day, with the same hauler, emptying the same two carts. No districts, no which-side-of-Armour-Road question. It's the simplest setup in our service area, and the reason is size. The 2020 census counted 4,467 people and 2,722 housing units on about 4.4 square miles of land, and a good part of that land is industrial and riverfront. The residential grid is tight, the lots are small, and one collection day covers the whole town.

That tightness is also why a dirty cart is harder to live with here than in almost any other Northland city.

What day is trash pickup in North Kansas City?

Tuesday, citywide. The city contracts with GFL Environmental for residential trash, recycling, bulky items, and yard waste. Each Tuesday GFL empties your 65-gallon trash cart and your 65-gallon recycling cart, same day, every week.

A few details the city spells out that people miss:

• Carts go within three feet of the curb and cannot block the sidewalk. On streets where the sidewalk runs close to the curb, that takes some thought.
• Leave room for the truck arm. An automated arm needs clear space around each cart. On NKC's narrower residential streets, a car parked tight against your cart is the most common reason a cart gets skipped.
• Extra bags need a sticker. Excess bag stickers are sold at City Hall, 2010 Howell Street, or through GFL customer service at (816) 380-5595.
• Holiday weeks can move the day. Check the city's notices around major holidays instead of assuming Tuesday holds.

One trap is the ZIP code. North Kansas City is 64116, but 64116 is not all North Kansas City. Parts of the ZIP up the hill toward Briarcliff sit inside Kansas City, MO, on KCMO's own carts and KCMO's schedule. If your mail says 64116 and your cart has a KCMO sticker on it, NKC's rules don't apply to you. Pull your address up on the trash day map or the 64116 lookup before you trust a neighbor's cart.

What goes in each NKC cart

The recycling cart

GFL takes paper, cardboard, and plastic, aluminum, and steel containers. Food and beverage cartons are fine. Fast food and takeout containers are not, and neither are frozen food boxes.

Three things never go in the NKC recycling cart:

1. Plastic bags
2. Glass
3. Styrofoam

Glass is the one that surprises people who moved from somewhere that took it. In NKC it goes to a Ripple Glass purple bin, and the city hosts one of those bins itself. Glass placed in the cart contaminates the load and gets landfilled anyway.

Bulky items

GFL picks up up to five bulky items per home on the first Tuesday collection of each month. That covers couches, chairs, dressers, mattresses, tables, desks, windows, doors, and appliances. If you miss the first Tuesday, you wait a month. Plan the garage cleanout backward from that date.

Yard waste

From March 1 through December 31, you can set out up to 10 biodegradable paper bags or tied bundles of limbs each week. Bundles are tied with rope or twine and can't exceed 18 inches in diameter or 4 feet long. City Hall sells paper yard bags at 10 for $2. The rule is paper, so skip the plastic lawn bags.

October and November are when this matters. NKC's older street trees drop a lot of leaves onto small yards, and the temptation is to stuff wet leaves into the trash cart. Don't. Wet leaves in the bottom of a cart are a compost pile with a lid on it.

Why 65 gallons on a small lot changes the math

Most of our service area rolls 96-gallon carts. NKC's are 65. A smaller cart isn't cleaner. It's denser.

The same week of household trash packs into about two-thirds of the volume. Bags sit tighter against the walls, anything that leaks runs straight to a smaller floor, and there's less air in the cart to dilute what's breaking down. A 65-gallon cart concentrates that liquid on a smaller floor, so it builds faster and sticks harder.

Then there's where the cart lives. On a big lot in Staley or Shoal Creek, the cart sits in a three-car garage or behind a fence 60 feet from the house. On a typical NKC lot off Swift Avenue, Howell Street, or one of the numbered avenues, it sits beside the house, often right under a window or next to the back steps. The cart is close to your kitchen, and it's close to your neighbor's too. A smell you'd never notice on an acre is hard to miss on a narrow city lot.

If you own a rental in North Kansas City

Roughly three out of four occupied homes in NKC are rented, per census estimates. That makes the cart a landlord question more often here than anywhere else we work.

The pattern we see is predictable. A tenant moves out in summer, the last week of trash sits in the cart for days, and the next tenant inherits a cart with a dried layer on the floor and a smell that comes back every warm afternoon. They call about the cart, the property manager sends someone with a garden hose, and the problem returns two weeks later. • After the first bulky Tuesday in spring. Cleanout season leaves residue behind.
• Mid-July. Peak heat in a denser cart is the worst combination we deal with.
• Late October or early November. Clear out the summer before it freezes to the floor, and before the leaf season fills your cart with damp debris.
• Between tenants, for rental owners, whatever the month.

Is the noise a problem on a small lot?
