Smithville Trash Pickup Days (and When to Put Your Bins Out)

April 17, 2026 · Bin Bros KC Team

Smithville has a few things going on that make trash and bin maintenance a little different from other Northland cities. You have the lake houses — some occupied year-round, some only weekends. You have the Smithville Lake watershed, which means anything leaking into the ground eventually touches the reservoir. And you have a mix of in-town residents with regular schedules and rural addresses on less predictable routes.

This guide covers the practical things: which day is your pickup, how bins work at a lake house, and what to do about the raccoons and smell.

Smithville trash pickup schedule

Most residential addresses in 64089 run on Monday or Thursday pickup, depending on which section of town. The city contracts with a commercial hauler for residential service.

Pickup days by area:

  • Most of Smithville proper: Monday
  • Some rural and eastern areas: Thursday
  • Neighborhoods near the lake: varies — check with your HOA or the city

To confirm your day, call Smithville Public Works or check your last trash bill — the pickup day is usually printed on it.

Holidays bump the schedule by one day. Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day all shift Monday pickups to Tuesday and Thursday pickups to Friday.

What's different about Smithville bins

The lake house factor

A significant percentage of Smithville homes are lake properties. Some are primary residences; some are second homes used only on weekends or during the summer season.

For second homes:

  • Weekend-only occupancy means bins sit all week between uses. If food residue goes in Sunday night, it sits in heat until the next Saturday. That's a long time for bacteria to build up.
  • Empty homes still have bins collecting pollen, leaves, and rain. Bins that aren't opened for weeks develop mold and moisture pockets that smell terrible when the bin is reopened.
  • Unattended bins are vulnerable to raccoons, stray cats, and deer that learn to push over unsecured bins. A toppled bin open to the elements becomes a much bigger cleanup.

Our quarterly service works well for lake homes because it happens on schedule whether you're there or not. You don't need to be home — we clean curbside.

The watershed concern

Smithville Lake is the drinking water source for Smithville and surrounding areas. What goes into the ground around your home eventually can reach the lake.

This matters for bin cleaning because cold-water "rinsing" with a garden hose washes bin residue (and the bacteria in it) into your yard, where it eventually enters the storm drain or groundwater. On a normal lawn, this is a minor concern. In the Smithville Lake watershed, it's worth thinking about.

Our cleaning process captures 100% of the wastewater onboard the truck. Nothing enters your yard, the lake, or the Little Platte River. This matters more in Smithville than in most cities we serve.

The wildlife factor

Smithville has more wildlife pressure on trash bins than most Northland cities:

  • Raccoons from the lake shore and wooded areas
  • Opossums in denser parts of town
  • Coyotes at the edges of residential zones
  • Deer occasionally knocking over unsecured bins
  • Stray cats that learn which bins to check

Our raccoon deterrent guide applies to most of these — the common thread is removing the food-residue scent from the bin. Clean bin, closed lid, and bring it out in the morning of pickup, not the night before.

When to clean Smithville bins

Smithville bins need cleaning a little more often than average for three reasons:

  1. Humidity is higher near the lake. More moisture in the bin interior means faster bacterial growth.
  2. Lake house residue stays longer. Weekly trash volume is lower, but what's in there sits longer between pickups.
  3. Wildlife activity scatters residue around the bin exterior, not just the interior.

Suggested schedule:

  • Full-time Smithville homes: Quarterly (every 3 months). Most popular plan.
  • Lake house / second homes: Bi-monthly from May through October, paused Nov-Feb. Addresses the summer wildlife and humidity window specifically.
  • New lake house owners: Start with a one-time deep clean ($75) to reset an inherited bin, then subscribe.

FAQs from Smithville homeowners

Can you clean bins at a lake house if I'm not there?

Yes. That's why curbside service is set up this way. You don't need to open gates, move cars, or even be home. We clean what's at the curb on your regular service day. You'll get a text the morning of so you know we came.

What if my lake house is down a private drive?

We can usually accommodate. Depending on drive length and access, there may be a small surcharge for extended routes. Call to discuss before booking.

Is the cleaner safe for the Smithville Lake watershed?

Yes. Biodegradable soap with essential oils. No bleach. No petroleum-based chemicals. 100% of wastewater captured onboard our truck and disposed of at approved facilities. Nothing enters the lake or any waterway.

Will it keep raccoons and deer out of my bins?

It significantly reduces wildlife activity. The primary attractant is food residue scent. Cleaning removes the scent. Combined with a secure lid (a cinder block or a bungee strap works for most Smithville lake houses), you'll see a big drop in wildlife visits.

Can my HOA get a group discount?

Yes. HOAs with 20+ households qualify for group pricing plus a per-subscriber kickback to the community fund. Several Smithville subdivisions have this set up. Email harvey@binbroskc.com for the board pitch template.

What about fishing scraps?

If you clean fish from the lake and put guts in your trash, pay attention to this. Fish residue is one of the strongest bacterial attractants and one of the hardest to clean out. If you do a lot of cleaning at home, a bi-monthly schedule makes sense instead of quarterly.

Do you handle summer-only service?

Yes. Many Smithville lake customers sign up for service May through September only. Just mention "summer only" when you sign up or text us for a custom schedule.

What to do this week

If you have a Smithville home or lake property and the bin has been neglected:

  1. Book a first clean at half price — code First50 makes the first Quarterly clean $22.50. Sign up here.
  2. For lake houses: consider the seasonal (May-Sept) schedule. Most lake owners find it fits their usage pattern.
  3. Secure the lid tonight with a bungee cord if raccoons have been active. $5 fix.

Smithville is one of our steadier coverage areas, partly because lake homeowners tend to value the consistency. Most bins in Smithville see the first significant summer smell problem in mid-June. Booking before then saves the clean-up later.
